Sunny Hours and Summer Days...

"I was rich, if not in money, in sunny hours and summer days..."  ~Henry David Thoreau

My latest project has been to mulch the beds and gardens with pine needles and bark of which I have an abundant supply on the hillside where Millie and I walk.  I do enjoy the looks of it piled quite high with pine cones scattered about, but have no idea as to how sustainable it will be.  I wonder if I have the will and the power to rake and load up enough to finish the job. I will readily admit that I do have a ways to go.  And then, there are ticks on that wonderful old hill...

Pine needle mulch from the hill...

And more in the little garden.

Feed time with the kittens is sometimes interesting, and a bit challenging.   Not only do the raccoons come calling at that hour, but a fourth cat seems to think the old barn is his home as well.  We call him Hobo.  At first the kittens were afraid of him, but now seem friendly enough with him.

That cheeky raccoon is not about to go away until he's been fed. We have raccoons that come around in the late evenings checking out Kitty's food in case there's any left.
I like your zinnias; they are amazing.
And that gorgeous Poppy💜💜💜💜

Gorgeous, gorgeous flowers. I like the hummingbird caught in your first photograph.
Cat and raccoon together - is that unusual?

Good morning Your post is just lovely-hugs that would be a lot of work hauling that in for your garden-but will look nice and keep the weeds down.
cute with racoon and kitty Happy 4th and weekend

Pine needles are just fine with me but I pick up and toss every pine cone that falls as I don't want the seeds dropping and propagating more trees.
Whew, I'd be frightful to have a raccoon in such close proximity to me or animals I loved. Often there is a report in the news of rabid raccoons or other animals.

I love your flowers I have zinnias planted but they have not bloomed yet.
I use pine needles around the things that like acid.

I did not think raccoons came out during the day. Guess he or she needs to eat too. Lovely flowers...especially those zinnias. Janice

Ahhh...your paper-like poppies captivate me each and every time I see them! I would so love to see some of those popping up in my garden! I did try some seeds that I thought looked like some of yours but they came up totally different (and I think it was a stretch to even call them a poppy) and never came back. I would think your pine mulch will be VERY sustainable. I have it "naturally" under many areas where there are pine groves and it doesn't matter if I cover it in "real" mulch over and over - it always reverts. to pine needles and cones. The photos of the trash pandas and kitties are adorable...I know the raccoons can be a nuisance and are not very often welcome, but they are amusing, yeah?

So the raccoon is not afraid of you? Such adventure at your place. I hope your pine needle mulch plan goes smoothly; it sounds good in theory, but carting the stuff, and then the ticks - ? Good luck!

I love love love your zinnias! I hope the mulch works out; it feels good to make use of something so abundant and free -- well, except for the labor costs!

Your images are sensational as always even the 'mulchy' ones. I would love to see a Racoon in my back garden but not likely in Blighty.

I love those zinnias! They remind me of my mother who always had them in her garden. Be sure to be aware of those awful ticks - they are mighty plentiful this year it seems.

If we forget to bring in the barn cat's kibble tray at dusk from the front entry there is usually a raccoon or two who squabble and clatter over the leftovers. My zinnias are a bit feeble this year so I'm enjoying yours with the rustic fence as a backdrop.

That racoon is making himself right at home. Hobo may have found a home. Hope the mulch works. I have too many slugs to mulch.
