Dances With Wolves...

Recently, we had a problem with our satellite receiver and television which left us with no service for several days.  We really kind of enjoyed the time without it.  Ahh, the quietness of it all...

But, once it was back up and running, and all systems were go, we settled back to watch something.   As luck would have it, my favorite movie, Dances With Wolves, was playing. I turned on "Closed Captioning" so I wouldn't miss a word, made some popcorn, and put up my feet.  Now, it's not a new movie for either of us, for we have watched it  a countless number of times before, but I never tire of it.

Gosh, there's a lot to love about this movie, which won a grand total of seven Academy Awards.  What a beautiful homage it pays to the old American West and to the last frontier.

"Thirteen years later, their homes destroyed, their buffalo gone, the last band of free Sioux submitted to white authority at Fort Robinson, Nebraska.  The great horse culture of the plains was gone and the American frontier was soon to pass into history."

And, then, for those of us who know the love of a dog, there was Two Socks.  Just take a look at this  excerpt from the movie.  How can anyone not love Two Socks?  And, don't forget to turn up the sound, for the music, which was composed and conducted by John Barry, is just wonderful.

All of  the dolls pictured here are from my collection of Skookum "Bully Good Indians," the first of which were made by Mary McAboy (1876-1961) and later mass produced and sold as souvenirs across the American West in the early 20th century.

Dances With Wolves is a favourite movie of mine, also. A movie I have watched many, many times. It never fails to move me deeply. Indeed Two Socks and John Dunbar's horse, Cisco are among the highlights of this movie. As is the beautiful cinematography of that amazing landscape......and the music. Back in the day I purchased the DVD of the sountrack....it is haunting. It is a most beautiful story, but such a sad one. If I remember, when I saw Dances With Wolves at the cinema, upon it's release, I quietly sobbed in the darkness. As for your dolls, they are amazing. Oh those faces you have dreamed up...so realistic. It is obvious to everyone who looks upon your gorgeous creations that this beautiful movie resonates deeply within you. As always, I sit here and cannot stop looking at your beautiful Skookum "Bully Good Indians", dolls. Oh, all the exquisite details....they take my breath away. You, Mary, are an amazing artist.

I've seen it and also read the book which I liked better.
But I would always rather read then watch.

I saw it the other day two. Such a shame how we treated the true Americans of this country. So sad. Glad your satellite service came back up in time for you to watch it. Janice

I thought that you had created those dolls. They are special.
So is Dances with Wolves one of the rare movies we actually went to see in the theater. We should watch it again soon.

I have never watched the movie, but have read a lot about the Indian cultures. I have strong opinions about how they were treated and how much has been lost and destroyed. The expressions on the dolls are very unusual and they seem to show vague fear.

I have always enjoyed this movie as well. I have always admired the Skookum dolls, but have never owned one. They make a lovely, colorful addition to your home.
