Spring Migration...

My favorite little bird with my favorite flower - the Ruby-Throated Hummingbird and Monarda or Red Bee Balm.  This photo is from last year's files.  There's a story behind the photo that tells how it came to be, but I won't get into that now.  It doesn't matter anyway for I love how it accidently turned out.

Earlier today, I checked the Hummingbird Spring Migration Map and realized that these little birds are getting mighty close to our neck of the woods.  It is definitely time to get a couple of feeders out.

Linnie Butts & Co. finally got together for a final photo shoot.  If you'd care to take a look just click on the old sewing machine near the top of this page.

It will be another month before those little hummers get this far north. I always look for them around my mother's birthday, which is May 5th. I think your rendition of the photo is lovely, but I must confess that I didn't know there were such things as watercolor crayons. Ahhh, dear Miss Linnie...she melts my heart each and every time I lay eyes on her. ~Robin~

Good evening, This is such a beautiful photo of the hummer and bee balm a favorite photo of mine, and you did a great job painting it too. These would be awesome enlarged and framed.
I didn't know about this hummingbird map looks like they are arriving in Missouri too. Usually I put my feeders out the week of April 15th here. thanks for sharing the map.
I will go and look in on the girls too
Hoping to be able to work outdoors tomorrow warmer today but very very windy. and our neighbor was burning leaves-could not believe that one.

Anna's Humminbirds tend to spend the winter here and we see them from time to time. The Rufous will be arriving any day and might even be back although I haven't seen any yet.
Linnie Butt's dress is beautiful as are all the others.

I sure hope the wee hummingbirds don't try to come this far north - not until it warms up a whole lot more than it has been. We toyed with putting out a feeder for them but we're planning to be away for a couple of weeks right when they should be coming back. Will have to see.
Great drawing, btw!

I've seen a couple (or maybe just one twice) in our yard so far. Feeders have been out a week now.

Love your art work!!

I love your painting! You must do more of them.
Our hummers are here by May 15 usually. I can't wait to see them. My mom had a HUGE bed of bee balm-the tall wild ones. We had transplanted them from the creek across the road. They spread like -well, like wildflowers-and of course the hummers went crazy for them. Mom had lots of hummers. I'm super happy for spring-it helps to get out of winter same-ness...

I have a vague memory of having seen, and been enchanted by, hummingbirds in California when I visited cousins there in 1975, a loooong time ago! Your photo intrigues, and your pencil drawing is a lovely evocation of it.
Your five girls sitting in a row are delightful, I love their expressive faces, and so interesting to see how they started out. And I have answered my own question by noting on your first post here that the name does indeed link to Beatrix Potters home.
Happy walking, bird feeding and stitching

I love that last picture. What a gorgeous doll and those old sewing machines were works of art in addition to be functional.

Our beloved hummingbirds, how nice that yours have begun to arrive. From the map it looks like we have another four weeks or so before we see them here. Oh, the dolls, how sweetly prim and proper they are in their Sunday best attire. They are always so enchanting, and I hope you are inspired to continue making them one by one by one. Your artistry is amazing.

Like Robin there will be at least another month for them to get here. I do not put out feeders as the ants are just brutal, but I do plant my gardens with things they love.

The photo and art are lovely...such pretty colors. I'll put my feeders up this week, just in case we have a few stop by earlier than usual. Thanks for the reminder! Mary

I didn't know there was such a map. Looks like the Ruby-throated hummingbirds are here in NC now. I will get a feeder or two put out tomorrow. Your drawing is really good. I love it.
