Summer Begins... (Pictures from our first day).

I love this picture of the setting sun taken by my son in the hay field.

It may have been the longest day of the year, but it still wasn't quite long enough.

Millie and I mowed our trail.  Then, we walked it.

And, she took a dip in the pond.

Millie watching Coyote... ( She spends a lot of time these hot days dug into the flower bed by the back porch.  She is careful not to harm the plants.  She's a good girl.)  I can't decide if she likes or dislikes these distant cousins.  If she dislikes them, then I am their only friend here.

And the tanager sings his summer songs.

Happy Summer to you all.

I love the sunrise shot, too. A farmer's work is never done. I have never seen a coyote that dark.

We have no tanagers here, but the twittering of the goldfinches makes up for it. Our little hayfield is ripe for cutting, but the subsistence farmer who cuts and bales it for his small herd is slow to get it. Thunderstorms are in the air this morning, muggy and hot. Millie has the right idea, keep watch on the coyote from afar, they are no friend of ours.

I felt like I could smell the cut hay and feel the sunshine. Your post took me back to my childhood summer days visiting the family farm and riding the tractor with my grandfather. I admit to being a little skiddish of coyotes. We know they hang out in our yard at night. Since Sam is inside-it's ok.
Happy summer to you and Millie! I'd love to try to paint her portrait if you email me a picture-but only if you want to.

AWWW....So wonderful to know that life goes on even though times are rough now. When we were baling hay a long time ago, there was no such thing as round bales! Even those squares were heavy to put on the elevator and to stack. Loving Millie and her good life with you!

It's just as you say, these long days aren't long enough, they are so sweet in many ways. And just when the air is cooling a bit and one can relax a little more from the work and demands of the day, it's beyond time to go to bed and be ready for the next.

Your pictures and words combine to make me think I can, almost, smell that fresh-mown hay field. Thank you for the deliciousness.

Happy Summer Mary.... You captured it so beautifully in your photos and words....and it makes me heartsick for farmlife even though it was a hard life. I am fortunate though to be surrounded by farm fields so can enjoy the smell of fresh cut hay, the beauty of the round bales in the field, the smell of the corn tasseling when that time comes. I have a few packs of coyotes I could try shooing your way? 😉 ~Robin~

I like the picture of the setting sun. It's a busy time of year whether on the farm or just in the garden. I hope you and Millie keep right on walking and enjoying each day.

Our Beachy Amish neighbors made a second cutting this week of the hay in our small field and have just come by to roll it into bales ahead of [we hope] some much needed rain.
Coyotes --or the coy-dogs as we called them in Vermont--seem to move in everywhere--restless, lurking, yodeling their lonesome calls during the night.

That sunset photo is wonderful - proof once again that farmers work all hours.
There's an issue here with coyotes moving into urban settings and then attacking pets (and people). They seemingly have no fear.
And don't you wish you could join Millie in the pond!
