Well, Millie and I did it. We made our long anticipated 1000th walk over the hill. The world didn't seem to notice, but to us, it was something to celebrate. Lots of memories are locked into those 1000 days, some of which I photographed, but most of them are like "a river, glimpsed once and already carried past us, and another follows and is gone." (Marcus Aurelius) I will post a few pictures taken from those 1000 days at the end of this post.
In other news, the kitties moved themselves to another barn. When I went to the old barn on New Year's morning, I found nothing but an old empty crib. All of my sweet kitties had gone missing. One can imagine the thoughts that raced through my mind. It wasn't until we were doing the evening chores that we spotted one of them in the tractor barn. What to do? Has anyone ever had success at herding a bunch of cats?
They were all quite anxious and very wary, having reverted back to some of their wild ways. Their mother was, after all, a feral cat, so their DNA was not to be denied. There would be no catching them that day to return them to the safety of the old crib as Dan suggested we do. Besides, I couldn't help but think, that maybe they were wiser than we were. Was there some danger lurking around the old barn that made them seek a new safer place?
I was relieved that they were all safe and still together. In hopes that they would return on their own, we left them in their new place, which was a bit more than a quarter of a mile away from their old place. I did not feed them that day.
Early morning of the next day, we found them just as we had left them the evening before. They were hungry. I fed them. They had found a tub of bale-wrap mixed with hay in which they had obviously slept. So, there you go.... Cats will be cats. I moved their feed and water dishes to their new abode and made their bed better. I stroked all their backs this morning.
I'll never forget the late night walk Millie and I made in which we were harassed by the coyotes.

Congratulations, Mary and Millie, on the 1,000 walks! The world may not have noticed but it is, nonetheless, a remarkable accomplishment...and, without doubt, you and Millie are all the better for them...not only physically but in your soul as well. You caught some memorable photos also. That is puzzling about the kittens...and, yes, I've attempted to herd cats (every time I go from the lake or return from the lake) and it is a hopeless task. And you have twice as many as I do with feral blood in their veins LOL. Perhaps the new place is warmer? In any event, as you say, cats will be cats. Stay well and safe. ~Robin~
Congratulations on getting in all those walks. Quite an accomplishment.
Yes, about walking in the snow!! :)
Bob use to blame everything on our kitties. Now that they are all gone, he blames things on Tundra our dog. LOL So glad you found your kitties. My thought is they moved for some reason as cats are smarter than most folks think. Congrats on your 1000 days of you and Millie walking. I would never walk in a snowstorm though. I hate even going out in the cold to take Tundra out. Janice
You did it!! The 1000 walks with the adventures that came along with those treks. The kitties look so adorable. I wonder why they felt they needed to move. Strange. But at least they didn't take off leaving you to wonder what happened to them.
Happy New Year
I think you may be right and the kittens sensed danger in their former home.
Congratulations on the 1000! I'm not sure I would have outfaced the coyotes, though. You're braver than me!
Happy and healthy 2025 to you and yours.
Congratulations! That's another big milestone for you and Millie. I agree that is's a mystery why the kitties felt the need to move - I suspect something must have frightened them away because you wouldn't think they'd leave a source of food without a really good reason.
Congratulations on your walking success; you are definitely a person who doesn't shirk on your resolutions! You capture so much beauty on these walks - I am thinking of that last photo, with the ice on the branch; we don't really want too much ice, but it is stunning when it comes.
Those kitties are so sweet, the way they look up at the camera all together! You had a lot of work to move their luggage over to the new place. I hope they'll settle and be well there.
Great job on completing 1,000 walks. Love the photos. Walking in a snowstorm is my favorite thing to do. It is always so peaceful. We had wild barn cats when I was a kid and when they got to a certain age the moms would move them somewhere different. Maybe it is in their DNA also. Happy New Year!
