Celebrating One Hundred Walks...

It has been one hundred days and one hundred walks since those oh-so-cold and snowy days in February  kept Millie and me off the hilltop trail.  So, today, instead of 1,417 walks which it could have been, it is a mere one hundred.  I had thought I wouldn't keep track anymore, but the habit of writing it on the calendar, along with a few other little facts that are important to  me, has become a happy little habit.  In celebration of the day,  Millie and I mowed the path across the meadow ~ well, at least she went along, sniffing and snuffing of every old animal trail from the night before.

My daily walks go way back.  Millie is not the first to walk these old hillsides with me.  Before her there was my beloved Nell who lived to be almost seventeen years old.  I suffered greatly when I had to give her up.  She is buried on her favorite old wool rug where the trail starts up the hill, just out the back gate, where I can have a few words with her every day.  I put pretty things on her grave which I think she would like.

And, before Nell, there was Holly, and before her there was Heidi... I loved them all.   But, my very first dog was Sid.  My mom said they brought her home on my first birthday.  I suppose he was a family dog, but he seemed to like me an awful lot for he was always with me whatever I was doing.  Here he is with me and my cousin, Joy.

So many memories of your walks with all your dogs.
Wow it's been 100 already. Seems like you just started over. June is my anniversary month for when I started taking a morning walk - it will be 33 years.

It seems you have had many wonderful companions over the years. Nell was so beautiful, too. Sid's stance says he was serious about keeping his "sister" safe!

Congratulations on your 💯 walk ☺️ You and your cousin are cuties 💕. It is sad that our furry friends don’t live as long as we do. It can sure be difficult when they are no longer there.

You've been blessed with a series of furry companions! It's great that you and Millie took up counting those daily walks again. It sounds as if jotting things down on your calendar serves as a sort of journal.

First of all, I have to tell you that I absolutely love that fence in your header! And then I have to say how much I enjoyed your memories of your beloved dogs. I, too, have had dogs that are now memories and am reminded of how much I continue to miss them.

Congratulations on a 100 walks! Starting over is not a bad thing, now you have new milestones to celebrate. Dogs are such a joy and they make the best companions. When I'm out walking with mine, I always imagine that they pity me for having a 'blind' nose. They get so much pleasure from sniffing around.

A hundred walks is more than I would probably do. Way to go! Growing up on my grandparents farms, we had many animals that we loved and lost. Like you with your beloved dogs, I have many good memories of them all. Janice

Congtatulations! 100 walks! You've had some beautiful dogs. They sure get attached to our hearts, don't they. I think the hurt of losing them get worse as time go on, for quite some time, then we kind of accept that they are gone. I think of Weetie and feel sad more now than when the accident first happened. Same with my little Pooh, a small black poodle. He was 15 when we lost him. Enjoyed you post.

Few things are sadder in life than losing a beloved dog. I want to walk and then I don't or cut it far too short. I'm noticing the truth of "use it or lose it" as far as my legs are concerned. I will begin to clearly note the days that I walk and then keep track of them. Hopefully, that would be an inspiration. Thanks for the idea.

Ahhhh....here you are! You left such a sweet comment on my last post but are a "no-reply" blogger so I could not respond to it, but wanted to thank you for your kind words. And I know now they are very genuine and come from a place of knowing. What a beautiful place you have to walk. It reminds me of my family farm. >Robin>

Looking back in time I so often mark our years by the pets that were part of the family. If only their little lives were longer.

I love that picture of you with your cousin and your first dog. He looks as though he is waiting for you to tell him what happens next, and she looks as though she wishes she had a lovely dog at her side as well. Pets are such a special part of our lives aren't they? A thing which non pet owners can never understand - that give and take of love and devotion. Mind you as a cat owner, I think the give is more on the human side, taken completely for granted by our feline companions. I have always wanted a dog, but never had the opportunity to own one, and our two elderly cats would certainly not give one their blessing.
Daily walks are a very fine thing, good for body and spirit. Without a canine companion, however, there are often too many excuses for not going out!
