It Was Quite a Party...

How can it be that this glorious month is almost over?  The colors of fall have been sensational from its beginning to its end.  It really has been quite a party.

The going along woodland' trails is a noisy affair these days as layers of leaves rustle beneath our feet.   Why, any critter for miles around undoubtedly knows when Millie and I go tramping up and down these old leaf-covered hillsides.  And, there's no way to know what might lay beneath all those leaves, rock or stick that might trip one up, so I lift my feet high and stick to the well-worn cattle trails.

And, what a month for beautiful sunsets it has been.  My camera was filled with them, so that I had trouble choosing my favorites.

I have been jokingly telling my family that I will be hibernating for six-weeks after Christmas ~ a kind of Sabbatical I have been calling it.  I looked that word up and found a definition that suited my use of the word.

Sabbatical ~ (1)A period of time during which someone does not work at his or her regular job and is able to rest, travel, do research, etc.  (2) A break or change from a normal routine.

Yes, that is exactly what I have in mind ~ just doing what to heck I please for six long weeks.

If you are familiar with The J. Peterman Company's catalog, you will know that there are some catchy little narratives describing the clothing and other items that are sold by the company.  The one below caught my eye.

An 18th-century stone manor house.  Somewhere in Ireland.  For an entire month.  You promised yourself someday you'd do it.  Someday is now.  You did it.  It's yours.  Your own green fields.  Your own horses.  Your own bedroom windows looking down on the crashing seas.  Your own peat-burning fireplace.  Your own ancient Land Rover (which even occasionally works).  Your own live-in cook (with a few ideas of her own).

Ha! Ha!  Now how about that for a sabbatical?  (Of course, J. Peterman thinks one should take along their English Hunting Jacket.  100 per cent Shetland tweed from a 183-year old mill in northern England.  Price $298.

This was the view from my window late this morning.  It will do me just fine.  Besides, the thoughts of crashing seas frighten me. (Note those blue, blue skies.  It was another gorgeous day!  And 75 degrees!)

Good morning Mary, November has been glorious here too-gorgeous sunrises, beautiful fall colors this year as well. Loved the window view.
Great quote, I am not familiar with this company but will check it out-sounds similar to another we have looked at with high quality clothing but expensive.
Maggie Rose must be so excited about her new dress-off to check it out hugs Kathy

I must say that October and November have kept us spinning in terms of weather. One day you need a winter coat and are freezing; and another day like today will be almost 60 degrees. You have beautiful scenery surrounding you; from all the Fall foliage to the sunset skies.

Oh Yes you've hit the nail dead center this time. The change of weather and scenery is true cause for sitting back and doing overviews. WOW! What a nice picture of the cows~I truly enjoy your pictures and narratives.

I would love to have a sabbatical...but that is not going to happen. But I can try to take hours here and there and not feel guilty for not doing what I should be doing.

I would love to have those trails to walk near me. That would be pure pleasure.

I want your weather!!!! 75* sounds like heaven to me after the months we've just endured. I know I should be thankful that we're not affected by the flooding, and I am. but still....
Your sunset photos are so lovely. I wonder if you carry a sturdy walking stick when you and Millie go walking. It might keep you from tripping on hidden obstacles.
Now I must go check out Maggie Rose's new dress.

November was a beautiful month here too. Hard to believe it has passed by so quickly.
I'm familiar with the Peterman catalog from Fraiser. :)

A sabbatical - ahhhhh, I can but dream. Your sunset photos are gorgeous but have to admit I'm rather partial to the cows.

Your sunsets are magnificent! Not to mention your beautiful hiking trail. We still have a couple inches of snow though tomorrow may see it melt away. Happy trails!

Whre I work, they do offer us employees a five week sabbatical every five years. Mine was in May. I actually worked our gift shop the entire time. It was wonderful because I was working for myself. What a gorgeous sunset. Alas our Autumn sucked. Most of the leaves on our trees here never turned colors. Very weird and hope it was not an omen for a bad Winter. Janice

When I was practicing, II often threatened a sabbatical, but never indulged...but my mind certainly has gone on its share of walkabouts LOL. Those sunsets are amazing....I especially love the one with the cows. With snow on the ground, it's hard to imagine 75 degrees anymore. That narrative in the catalogue reminds me of a book I recently read ("The House Between Tides")...right down to the old Land Rover LOL. It convinced me (the book, not the Land Rover) that I want to go to the Hebrides. ~Robin~

Your photos are so beautiful. I'm afraid of crashing seas too-but that cranky cook sounds interesting! I always love my visits here. I hope you will still blog during your sabbatical-I bet I spelled that wrong. But I hope you will be in blogland now and then.

Your pictures are so beautiful! I too hate to see November go. The leaves have been unusually pretty this year. Your words are beautiful too. Your talking about walking in the leaves reminded me...we were walking the dogs this afternoon when Dan stepped in a hole and almost fell. Everything is covered in leaves here. Going now to see the new dress.

I took a sabbatical this October and highly recommend it! It was extremely refreshing. Good luck with yours! Those sunset photos are breathtaking!

January has always seemed a good time to retreat a bit, to contemplate new projects, maybe take up some that are unfinished. Here in Kentucky our winter is less severe than what has been normal for us in other places, so it is easier to spend time outdoors.
I'm thankful that in 'retirement' there is no need to leave home daily, to battle cold weather and icy roads. A spell of hibernation is pleasant.
